History

In 2002, Keymer and Hassocks CC approached Hassocks Parish Council (HPC) with a view to resurrecting discussions on the future of the pavilion. Both parties agreed that a new building was needed for the benefit of all current and potential sporting users in the village.

The cricket club engaged an architect to draw up plans to get the ball rolling, and the estimated cost generated from these drawings was approximately £350,000. In October 2008, local architects Ecotecture, specialists in this kind of project, were appointed by HPC, and are driving the project forward on behalf of the council.

As main users, KHCC has committed £30,000 to the project, including approximately £5,000 raised since 2002. Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC) have awarded £119,000 to HPC towards the costs and in December 2008, £58,500 was secured from Viridor Landfill Tax Credits. This means the current externally funded total stands at £207,500.

Current situation: January 2010

After much negotiation, a final outline design has been reached, and the quantity surveyor has come up with a revised cost plan of £400,000. This design and its cost plan was considered by full Parish Council in May 2009, and it was agreed that the necessary finance would be available providing the costs did not escalate. Tenders have largely come in below this figure, and we hope to appoint a contractor in February.

Next steps:

KHCC and HPC will soon be discussing the option of delaying the build until the end of the 2010 cricket season, to avoid us being effectively homeless while we try to stage a league programme on a building site. We will keep everybody posted of developments.

Any questions should be directed to Howard Collins, KHCC Chairman and Project Leader.
